Cognitive Care Kits – A Unique Way to Exercise the Mind

Posted On Tuesday January 28, 2020

Libraries are for everyone. As such your local library is here for you. We are about learning, understanding and empowering you in your life’s journey. That’s why we are pleased to offer Cognitive Care Kits for individuals living with Alzheimers or other forms of dementia.

Dementia (an overall term for a set of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain) affects over 564,000 Canadians. Symptoms can include short term memory loss, change of behaviour, confusion and difficulties with language. This may affect a person’s ability to perform familiar and daily tasks. Sadly, dementia is progressive and will get worse. However, there are things that can be done to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and to help slow the progression of the disease.

Patrons can now borrow from a collection of 14 unique Cognitive Care Kits, all containing an assortment of prepared games, puzzles, creative activities and books that are geared to exercise the mind, help retain skills and encourage social engagement. These important kits were developed in conjunction with the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton with the goal of keeping the brain active and helping to prevent isolation and stigma.

The kits are designed for those who have a degree of cognitive impairment as a result of a variety of conditions such as Alzheimer disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and others. Caregivers or persons with a cognitive disorder must attend an initial information session (Introduction to Cognitive Care Kits), where kit items are explained and demonstrated. After this session, customers may borrow kits without any additional requirements. We encourage patrons to borrow all 14 kits.

How to borrow:

  • Cognitive Care Kits are free to borrow with a HHPL Library card
  • Patron’s must complete our Introduction to Cognitive Care session prior to borrowing
  • Kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks
  • Late return kits are subject to overdue fines
