HHPL; Your Summer Fun Destination

Posted On Tuesday June 25, 2019

Whether you’re travelling to an exciting destination outside of Canada, enjoying the cottage on a quiet lake or staying home and enjoying the weather on the back patio, you can still take part in the Summer Reading Club (SRC) at HHPL. Participants can read books from anywhere and that’s the joy of the SRC program. Plus, when you join the program, you can win some really cool prizes too!

Although the program kicked off on June 15, it’s never too late to join. The Kids’ Summer Reading Club Program at HHPL promotes literacy in the community, keeps kids engaged, makes reading fun, and allows young patrons the opportunity to win prizes. HHPL’s Summer Reading Program is in partnership with TD and is Canada’s biggest, bilingual summer reading program for kids of all ages, interests, and abilities. The program, which is co-created and delivered by over 2,000 public libraries across Canada, celebrates Canadian authors, illustrators and stories. Plus, it’s designed to inspire kids to explore the fun of reading their way, which is the key to building a lifelong love of reading. Studies have shown that kids lose their reading skills over the summer, so HHPL is working hard to change that. Kids keep track of their reading on a calendar that they pick up from a library service desk. They then revisit the Library up to three times throughout the summer to report, earn prizes and be entered for a chance to win a cash prize from TD.

The Teen Summer Reading Challenge is run solely by HHPL and challenges teens to read something new and more often, and have fun while doing it. By completing special challenges, teens earn ballots in order to win prizes at the end of summer. Some of the teen challenges include a photo scavenger hunt, identifying books from the first line of the opening chapter, plus various puzzles and games. Teens keep track of their reading in a booklet that can be picked up from a library service desk.

The Adult Summer Reading Challenge, also run solely by HHPL, challenges adults to earn ballots upon completion of various crossword puzzles, word searches, Sudoku and logic puzzles, first line challenges, synonym book titles and more. These ballots are then used to enter into prize draws. A contest booklet for the adult program can also be picked up at a library service desk.
