New Virtual Summer Reading Programs!

Posted On Friday June 12, 2020

The Halton Hills Public Library’s goal is to increase literacy, encourage a love of reading in all people and have a ton of fun in the process! Now more than ever, with the early closure of schools due to Covid-19, it is critically important to keep kids engaged in summer reading to ensure their academic success in the fall. As such, HHPL is excited to announce a reimagined 2020 Virtual Summer Reading Programs for kids, teens and adults!

This year we are celebrating the Summer Reading Club with a launch party from June 15 – 20 with daily virtual activities for families to enjoy:

  • Monday, June 15 – Enjoy a Facebook Live Sing-A-Long at 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, June 16 – Facebook Nature Scavenger Hunt at 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 17 – Choose Your Own Invention drawing challenge at 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 18 – Magic School Bus Digital Escape Room at 2 p.m.
  • Friday, June 19 – Facebook Puppet Show at 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 20 – Drive by Car Parade (Georgetown: 11-11:30 a.m. & Acton: 2-2:30 p.m.)

HHPL’s Summer Reading Club program for kids is sponsored locally by the Acton and Georgetown TD Canada Trust banks. This program promotes literacy in our community, keeps kids engaged, makes reading fun, and allows young patrons the opportunity to read often and win prizes. Plus, it’s designed to inspire kids to explore the fun of reading their way, which is the key to building a lifelong love of reading. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s reading program has become fully virtual and promises to offer the same high-level of engagement that kids and parents have come to expect.

Using the Beanstack online platform, kids can keep track of their reading via an easy to use, pre-formatted dashboard. This intuitive platform allows parents to register in seconds as individuals or as a family. Beanstack makes the experience fun and easy to earn virtual badges, track all your reading, and win real-world prizes. Readers can also post book reviews and keep track of activities they complete along the way. Parents/kids can even keep track of their progress by using the Beanstack Tracker mobile app if they wish.

This year the Teen Summer Reading Challenge and the Adult Summer Reading Challenge are now completely virtual as well, and both programs are sponsored solely by HHPL. These programs challenge teens and adults to read something new, and more often, while having fun at the same time. Using the same Beanstack platform, teens and adults can register in seconds as individuals or as a family and keep track of all their reading, in the same easy to use dashboard. HHPL encourages patrons to challenge themselves to read more and to try something new in order to win prizes. Our puzzle and activity challenges are also back by popular demand, and the best part of this year’s virtual program is that you can participate from wherever you are. Take a moment and download the Beanstack Tracker app to keep track of all your reads and enjoy the mobile experience on your phone or tablet.

Registration for this year’s Summer Reading programs start Saturday, June 20. For more information about the new virtual Summer Reading Club Program, please visit the HHPL website.
