Community Partners in The Library

   Meet one-on-one with a Settlement Information Specialist from The Centre for Skills    Development and Training. Get help with questions about settling into your new community, or access Commissioner of Oath services.

   The Adult Learning Centre offers individual tutoring sessions in reading, writing, basic math, and computer basics for the workplace.

Newcomer Programs

English Conversation Circle:

Join us for a fun, relaxing, social night out to practice your English conversation skills with fluent English speakers and a TESL Ontario certified instructor.

Board Games for Newcomers:

Are you looking for a fun way to practice your English conversation skills and meet new people? Come down to the library to play some informal board games; all ages and skill levels welcome!

Learn Mandarin (普通):

The Halton Hills Chinese Association hosts an introduction to Mandarin class taught by members of our community. You will learn basic language concepts and structures and an overview of Chinese culture. Classes are held for children and adults.

Books and Movies

The Halton Hills Public Library has an extensive collection of books and DVDs in languages other than English. Please ask a librarian to help you find these materials at your local branch.

We also carry many resources for new Canadians seeking employmentEnglish as a Second Language (ESL), and educational materials on cultures around the world


Community Information:

The Library helps maintain the Halton Community Services Database that provides a comprehensive list of contact information for community and social service organizations in Halton Region.


In order to become a Canadian citizen, you must first pass the Citizenship Test. The Library has many resources to help newcomers prepare and practice for the test, including the Government of Canada’s official study guide, Discover Canada. You can also read, listen to, download, or order this publication from the Government of Canada website.
